Carol June Southall Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Carol June Southall (née Warren) of Kingston Ontario, who passed away on June 12th, 2025, at the age of 91. Carol was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. After training at the Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto, she spent most of her career as a nurse with the Victorian Order of Nurses. While Carol may have appeared timid, she was truly an original diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice SUPERHERO!

Carol was born on April 4th, 1934 in Toronto to Arnold Warren and Lin Prier Warren. She was preceded in death by her husband George Arthur Southall and is survived by her children: David (Laura), Diane, Stephen, Elizabeth (Jim), Kenny (Natacha), John (Rachel); her sisters: Nancy (Ron) and Susan (Michael); her grandchildren: Meg (Jamie), Duncan (Mary), Kenny, Will (Meredith), James, Ben, Carol (Wyatt), Alice, Nathan, Kolya , Lukai, Sydney; her great-grandchildren: Owen, Fiona, Emerson, George, and Claire; and her cherished extended family: including Chris and the Purdon clan.

Throughout her life, Carol was a passionate and dedicated volunteer, who worked tirelessly with many community organizations including the John Howard Society, the Kingston Penitentiary Citizen’s Advisory Committee, the North Kingston HIV/AIDS Project, the Kingston Community Development Project, Grandmothers to Grandmothers - the Stephen Lewis Foundation, as well as other initiatives in the United Church of Canada, including efforts surrounding the ordaining of gay clergy. These and other contributions made a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals. In particular, Carol’s commitment to the betterment of the lives of people who are incarcerated earned her recognition as a pillar of compassion in the community.

In all her activities, Carol was known for her enduring optimism, determination and grit, compassion, humour, acceptance, altruism, love, and capacities as a problem-solver. She was a gifted gardener, stone mason and pie maker. Some people said that Carol always knew what to do to help a sick child. Those who knew her well will remember her vibrant spirit, generosity, and the selfless way in which she enriched the lives of others.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the many personal caregivers for their love and support of the whole family during the more than 15 years Carol required home care, and offer heartfelt thanks to Stephen and Diane who provided outstanding care and love to Carol over the years.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 16th at 11:00 am at the Parham Village Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Parham United Church hall. All who knew and loved Carol are invited to attend and celebrate her truly remarkable life.
