Wayne was born in Oshawa, Ontario on October 15th, 1946. He grew up in Oshawa, Flinton, Bowmanville, Bothwell, and Courtice, Ontario. He worked many jobs over the years. He started at Lasco Steel in 1964 and then went on to work at Ouyang Boatworks and College Redwood; he later became a builder of log and timber frame homes, which he did alongside his sons, Mike and Gord. He was proud to be featured on the show This Old House in the late-80s, where he went to Concord, Massachusetts along with 149 other men to restore an 1835 barn using post-and-beam construction with stress-skin panels.
Wayne also appreciated the home-steading lifestyle. In 1981, he moved his family to Mattawa, Ontario where they built an off-grid home along Bastien Creek. They eventually relocated to Flinton. Although there were a few other moves, Flinton is where Wayne called home and was where his last couple of years were spent. Up until February of this year, he was living in the same house he had lived in when he was a boy with his brother Drew and his Grandfather Henry Spicer.
When he received his cancer diagnosis, Marg opened her home up to him, where the family knows he received excellent care and were able to visit with him. It was only his last three days that he spent at AB Smith Homestead House Hospice in Kingston, where he passed on a sunny Sabbath morning.
Wayne loved fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, and spending time outdoors. These are hobbies that he especially liked sharing with his family. Weslemkoon Lake was a spot that held a special place in his heart, with generations of family that lived and camped there over the years. He also enjoyed reading, writing, studying scripture, praying, and sharing the Word of God with others. He held a strong faith and trust in God and looked forward to Christ’s return.
